How to Set Family Intentions for a Meaningful Year Ahead
Every December, my family of four gathers around with a giant piece of paper (seriously, the bigger, the better) and lets our imaginations run wild. We write down anything we hope to accomplish, big or small, for the upcoming year. From bucket-list adventures to tiny personal wins, no idea is off-limits.
Some of these dreams find a spot on our family calendar—road trips, DIY projects, or finally cleaning out the garage. Others? They stay on the paper as a little reminder to see what magic the year brings.
Our 2025 “Goals”
Tying It Back to Yule: A Ritual of Release and Renewal
Our fire ritual has its roots in ancient Yule traditions, celebrated during the winter solstice. Yule marks the longest night of the year and the return of the light, symbolizing new beginnings. Just as people in centuries past would burn Yule logs to release the old and welcome the new, we write down what we want to let go of—stress, self-doubt, or just bad habits—and watch it burn.
Then, we embrace the Yule spirit of renewal by writing down what we hope to manifest in the coming year. Whether it’s better relationships, exciting adventures, or personal growth, the act of putting pen to paper feels both intentional and magical.
Celebrate and Repeat: Closing the Loop on Our Goals
Fast forward to the next December, and we pull out the previous year’s list. It’s always a mix of surprises (“Oh wow, we actually did that!”) and giggles (“Who thought adopting a pet alpaca was a good idea?”). We circle the wins, laugh at the misses, and start fresh with a new list for the year ahead.
This tradition keeps us grounded, connected, and always looking forward to what’s next—just like the Yule season, which reminds us that light follows even the darkest nights.

Ready to Add a Little Yule Magic to Your New Year?
If this sounds like fun (or you just want an excuse to light things on fire safely), grab some paper, your favorite snacks, and your family. Dream big, let go of what’s holding you back, and start the new year with a little intentional magic. And remember, Yule is all about renewal, so let the sparks fly! Don’t forget the marshmallows—they’re a modern-day Yule must-have.
